Indian technologists have designed the world’s cheapest laptop, a touch screen computer costing a mere $35 dollars.
The device similar in appearance to Apple’s revolutionary iPad, was developed by India’s premier technological institutes, the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Technology.
The tiny touch screen computer was designed primarily for it’s affordability to students, India’s human resource development minister Kapil Sibal revealed at the laptop’s unveiling.
Speaking at a news conference in New Delhi Sibal disclosed that his department were in contact with global manufacturers to begin mass production.
“We have reached a [developmental] stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything,” he said.

The eventual goal however, is to bring the cost of the world’s cheapest laptop down even further. Sibal said the aim of his department was to begin introducing the device to higher education facilities in 2011, and for mass production and sales volumes to bring the cost of the laptop down to $20 and eventually $10.
Sibal described the device’s capabilities in no mean terms. The touch screen laptop, he said, had video conferencing facilities, PDF readers, and web browsers, and that it’s hardware had the ability to incorporate new components according to user requirements.
